The Green Mountain High School Band program offers classes including concert band, jazz ensemble, percussion class, color guard, and music theory. Extracurricular opportunities include marching band, percussion ensemble, pit orchestra for the annual musical, and winter guard. Through each of the opportunities, students learn not only performance skills, but life and professional skills that will be valuable in any pursuit they choose after high school.
Matthew Verplaetse holds a Bachelor of Music in Music Education from Butler University (Indianapolis, IN) and a Masters of Music from Ball State University (Muncie, IN). While studying at Ball State, he was a graduate assistant to the jazz department, where he directed Jazz Ensemble III and a jazz combo, while playing tenor sax in the Jazz Lab Ensemble, the university’s premiere jazz big band. Before relocating to Colorado, Verplaetse taught in Indiana’s public schools for nine years, most recently at Warren Central High School in Indianapolis, Indiana. His teaching career in Indiana included teaching concert bands, jazz bands, orchestras, and marching bands at the middle school and high school levels. He is also an experienced performer on the saxophone, having performed in contexts including pit orchestras, concert bands, jazz bands, and saxophone quartets in various locations in the United States as well as Canada and Russia.
